In July I posted on my search for neighborhood boutiques. It likely didn’t raise an eyebrow that I was able to find the jewel, Keeping Up with the Jonses, in tony west Fort Worth. But today’s find might surprise you. As I’ve mentioned, in addition to Fort Worth, we also live way out in West Texas in the small, rural farm and ranch town of Haskell. That the cluster of counties around Haskell is sometimes referred to as The Big Empty says it all. Despite the remoteness, however, fashion diamonds can be found. But as with diamonds, they must be uncovered
Not long after we moved into the region I discovered Casablanca. Located 20 miles north of Haskell in the town of Munday, Casablanca sits a block west of the only stoplight and a block east of Caroline’s–a great place for a chicken panini, other than in July when she closes.
What makes Casablanca a winner is the owner, Kandis Stephenson. The success of boutiques generally rests with the business and fashion savvy of their owners. But in this case, Kandis has another leg up. She’s a hometown girl who spent her post-university career years in TV production. To make it in small-town retailing, you must be accepted as an insider. To make it in the world of fashion you need a solid perspective of pop culture.
Casablanca offers what I think of as ‘Santa Fe meets Dallas.’ It’s hard to explain. For certain there’s no rhinestone cowgirl here. Yet the feel of the West is undeniable. She also carries Rodan & Fields skin products, which is a huge fave of area women.
This year Casablanca was chosen to be a part of shoptiques.com, one of a handful of Texas boutiques on the international shopping site. In today’s market it’s this type of business savvy makes small-town boutiques successful. Being on-line internationally forces owners to stock for a broader fashion audience, thereby assuring that her local clients remain current.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my visit to Casablanca and urge you to look around at your own neighborhood. Whether you live in the city or the country, there are special places to shop locally.
